Advancing in Moisture Associated Skin Damage (MASD) Management Protocol:Going Beyond the Basics Guest Speaker Debra Thayer (MS, RN, CWOCN) BScN University of Wisconsin MScN University of Minnesota Board certified Wound Ostomy and Continence Nurse Synopsis Healthcare acquired skin damage comprises of a group of prevalent complications occurring across care settings. Keeping it safe remains an ongoing challenge for clinicians due to its complexity and interrelated factors contributing to comprised skin integrity. In addition to incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) and intertriginous injury, individuals experience moisture-associated skin damage (MASD) around stomas, devices and wounds. Painful for patients and time-consuming for nurses, these largely preventable complications also represent a cost burden to facilities. In this seminar, we will discuss considerations in the assessment, prevention, management of these common problems as well as a frame work that guides clinicians in maintaining skin integrity in vulnerable patients. Best practice strategies for skin care will be presented with a detailed look at a new and novel technology to improve cost & patient outcomes.
